Today's question is the first of seven in our first themed set!

A pioneering invention that aided in almost immediate long-distance communication was invented by the same person who came up with the system of connecting these messages using a system of paired wires and holes. Some of the employees who worked on connecting these messages used to have odd footwear so that they could move across the room faster.
